Alice Buford Obituary

I am so happy that you have come here today to celebrate my life. Whether you knew me as Alice, Shirley, Shelly, Mama, Aunt Alice, Grandma, or GG, I love you. I love you all for different and special reasons. I do want to share some things about me that I would like for you to remember and cherish in your hearts forever. I was born on March 30th. Do you all remember that party we had three years ago? I had a blast and enjoyed each one of you that were there. I was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, to Stallworth and Arlena Kimble. I have one big sister, Martha, but you all know her as Sista Baby or Aunt Martha. Growing up in Yazoo City, I have plenty of memories including following Sista Baby, helping my mama, and talking to my daddy. I also want you all to know that I took delight in driving to Belzoni, Mississippi, to the Catfish Festival and seeing all my cousins. I went to Yazoo City Training School where I got my high school diploma. I also attended Tougaloo College. I worked at the Silver Slipper with one of my good friends, Mildred. We sure had fun. Morris was there too! I moved to Chicago, worked hard, and took care of my family. I worked at Spiegel Catalog Center and later as a respiratory therapist. I was baptized while in Mississippi and has always been a member of Sun Rise Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago. At that time, it was under the leadership of Reverend Homer Gardner. While taking care of the business, I met and married the love of my life, Cleophus Buford. In case you want to know, we got married on April 8th. On May 15th, God called me home. He knew I was tired and that my duties here on Earth had been completed. I have started my journey here in heaven but knew I had to address some things. Find peace and solace knowing that I LIVED and LOVED life. I shopped and cooked until I no longer could. I talked on the phone for hours to Bay Bay, watched my grandchildren grow into adults, and had a hand in rearing those great grandchildren of mine. I also argued with but loved my best friend, Red. I know this is difficult but know that I am no longer in pain. I am here rejoicing, singing, and dancing in peace. There are some people I want you to check in on from time to time. My two wonderful children, Sharon and Eric. Play nice you two! My honorary daughter, Venus. Know that you were a sense of peace and comfort to me and I could call you any time of day or night. My five grandchildren, Danielle, Sheldon, Alexa, Tyler, and Maya. Continue to share my memories, wisdom, and stories that I have shared with you all. Take care of my six great-grandchildren, Ian, Ivan, Ivy, Isaiah, Christian, and Aleia. Bryan and Cherise, I love you and will tell Sista Baby and Jean you said hello. Johnnie Mae, keep having those family reunions!!!! We have a good time when we all come together and enjoy each other’s company. If I did not tell you last year, I felt better when I saw you all in the back yard. To all of my friends and family, check in with each other. Be with each other as you each have been there for me. Through my joys and pains to my greatest to worst days, I have been loved. I have to sign off now as I have other missions to complete. Again, thank you for coming together to celebrate my life. Alice
