Andrew “Big Top” Phillips, SR. was born on December 30, 1959, to the parentage of Emma Harris and Ed Williams in Tchula, Mississippi. He grew there and was cultivated by family. He was especially close to his uncles of whom he spoke often, saying they taught him everything he knew. He received his formal years of education in Tchula, enjoying playing football and spending time with his best friend and brother, “Fat Sam.” In 1975, Andrew moved to Chicago with his uncle and began working at W. R. Grace, from where he later retired. During this time, he also began to elevate his love for music and perfected his craft: playing drums. He found a group of like-minded musicians known as “Wind Chill Factor” and joined them as their drummer. The group played throughout various cities and states, including his home state of Mississippi. He then embarked on his greatest journey yet, fatherhood. Andrew Phillips, Jr., his first born arrived and was followed by Corey Leggon, Sr., shortly afterwards. His sons were his pride and joy. He met Lorretta Campbell, his partner in life and wife, and together, they settled down and raised the family. Andrew had a true zest for life. He loved being around family and friends. His presence was welcoming and his spirit gentle. He will be genuinely missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorretta Campbell; parents, Emma and Jim Harris and Ed Williams; uncles, Lawrence, June, and Clarence Phillips and Willard “Bud” Hospkins. He leaves to cherish his memories: his sons, Andrew Phillips, Jr., Corey Leggon, Sr. (Jazzmeeka), Alphonso Campbell, and DeShun Campbell (Jessica); uncle, Earl Phillips; aunts, Vert Lee Phillips and Alice Phillips; twelve grandchildren; best friends and brother, “Fat Sam” and Brenda; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
