Clarence Sturdivant, Sr., was born on September 29, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, to Moses and Alice (Wright) Sturdivant. He was the fourth of eight children and the only son born into this union. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses and Alice (Wright) Sturdivant; two sisters, Minnie (Nathaniel) Brandon and Ella Sturdivant; special aunt, Mima Lee (Charles) George; and brother-in-law, Robert Norman, all of Chicago, Illinois. Clarence departed this life on Thursday, April 3, 2025. He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend who was known for his warm smile and sense of humor that brightened the lives of everyone around him. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Word Up Christian Center Church under the leadership of the late Bishop John D. Tolfree. He also served on the Usher Board. Clarence was a praying man who loved gospel music and found joy in visiting churches throughout the city. His faith was a guiding light in his life and a source of strength for those who knew him. Clarence was educated in the North Lawndale community, attending Lathrop Elementary School and Harrison High School. He was a lifelong resident of North Lawndale; he formed strong bonds with many neighborhood friends who affectionately nicknamed him “Moe” and “Scrooge.” Clarence entered the workforce at a young age, working alongside his father at Holiday Laundry Dry Cleaners in Skokie, Illinois. He spent many years in the dry-cleaning industry, where he was known for his dedication, reliability, and strong work ethics. He also worked at B&S Family Car Wash in the south suburb of Chicago. He was also known for helping others find jobs and opportunities. Beyond his work, he was a man of many talents. He had a natural gift for working with his hands, was skilled in carpentry, and was always ready to help family and friends decorate or improve their homes. He also loved barbecuing. Many would say he was one of the best on the grill, something he did with pride and love. He leaves to cherish his memory: his two daughters and one son, Jasmine Sharae Sturdivant, Clarence Sturdivant, Jr., and Iesha Sturdivant, all of Chicago, Illinois; four grandchildren, Geremy Johns, Jr., Marvin, Malani, and Cyire Sturdivant of Chicago, Illinois; five loving sisters, Shirley (Thomas) Cherry, Juanita (Kelvin) Hester, Delores (Larry) Young, Arlene, and Patricia Sturdivant, all of Chicago, Illinois; one aunt, Inez Andrews of Flint, Michigan; former spouse, Rose Kirkwood Sturdivant of Chicago, Illinois; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
