Dorothy Ree Coleman was born on September 5,
1938, in Belzoni, Mississippi, to the late Joreatha Jackson
and T.C. Williams. She was the oldest of three children.
Brother Willie James Patrick and Sister Elnora Nelson
preceded her in death.
Dorothy moved to Chicago in 1957, where she later met
and married the late Frank Coleman. She became a
member of the Way of Calvary M.B. Church serving as
a choir member. She later transferred her membership
to Rising Star M.B. Church under the leadership of
Reverend W. Byrd, serving as the choir director for many
years. She continued her ministry of choir director and
choir president at the Greater True Love M. B. Church
under the leadership of Reverend C. Bryant. Dorothy had
a great love of God and an unfailing faith.
Dorothy was a staple in her Lawndale community and the
neighborhood grandma. There was never a face she didn’t
know, even if she couldn’t remember your name. She may
have fussed you out from time to time but she loved you
always.
She leaves to cherish her memories: four children,
Jacqueline Howze, Vernon Coleman (Mary), Reginald
Coleman, and Sherece Young; two sisters-in-law, Mary
Lou Coleman and Waresie Coleman; 15 grandkids;
36 great-grandkids; nine great-great-grandkids; god-
grandson, Lawrence Ward; special little cousins, Kim,
Sharell, Kameron, and Kamari Campbell; her faithful
friend and porchmate, Ms. Doreatha Penn; and host of
nieces, nephews, and cousins.
