Essie Spearmon Obituary

ESSIE LEE SPEARMON was born on July 13, 1943, in Walls, Mississippi, to her
mother, Willie Mae Rice, and father, Reverend Wesley Brooks. She was raised under
difficult circumstances, but even in hardship, she grew into a woman of strength and
resilience.
Essie pursued an education attending Harry S. Truman College where she completed
her studies in nursing and early childhood development. Her passion for caring for
others led her into a lifelong career of service. She worked at a daycare center for many
years before eventually fulfilling one of her greatest accomplishments. With hard work
and perseverance, she purchased her own home and started her daycare business rooted
in love, faith, and family.
Essie’s personality was vibrant and unforgettable. Outgoing and full of life, she loved
her family unconditionally and found happiness in every opportunity to be surrounded
by them. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, cherished every moment at
the casino, and was known for throwing huge parties that brought everyone together. To
her, life was meant to be celebrated.
But nothing meant more to her than her family. If you were her grandchild, you were her
pride, her joy, and her reason to smile on the hardest days. She poured her whole heart
into her family, loving them loudly, gently, and without limits.
She was a woman whose life was stitched together with faith, love, and joy. Church
wasn’t just a place she went, it was where her spirit found peace. She was a proud member
of Jordan Temple and Rock of Ages. Every hymn, every prayer, every Sunday morning
was a reflection of the heart she carried. Her presence was a gift, her love was a blessing,
and her legacy will live on in the faith she carried, the joy she shared, the traditions she
created, and the family she cherished with everything she had.
She lived her life with a quiet grace, a strong faith, and a heart full of love. Even now, as
we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we fear no evil because her love, her
lessons, and her spirit comfort us. She taught us that faith was not just something you
spoke about, but something you lived through every storm, every joy, and every season of
life. Even in her quiet moments, she carried a prayer in her heart. Today, we honor her by
keeping that prayer close to ours:
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I
can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
And when the holidays came around… that was her season! She made every celebration
feel warm, meaningful, and full of life. The holidays were where her love shined the
brightest in the kitchen, around the table, in the laughter of everyone she brought
together.
Essie answered the call and took God’s hand on November 18, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; sisters, Willie Mae Brown, Dorothy
Brooks, and Rosie Lee Brooks; brothers, John Wesley Brooks and Elijah Brooks;
daughter, Duwuana Clark; and grandson, Larry Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her brother, Joseph Brooks; sons, Richard Spearmon
and Darryl Spearmon; daughters, Sandra Spearmon, Theresa Spearmon, and Sonya
Spearmon; best friend, Mary “Lulu” Fonzville; and a host of grandchildren, great-
grandchildren, and loved ones.
Essie had many joys in life. She really adored her mother, brothers, and sisters. Spending
time at the casino and reading to her grandchildren were among her favorite hobbies,
especially the children’s book Corduroy. One of the fondest shared memories is her
tradition of gifting Cabbage Patch dolls to all her children and grandchildren. Growing
up without dolls that looked like her, she made sure her family would never feel the same.
Her life was a testimony of the serenity prayer, a woman who accepted, who endured,
who loved, and who walked bravely through everything that came her way. Now even as
we grieve, we find comfort knowing that goodness and mercy have followed her home.
Her love remains, her spirit rests, and her legacy lives on through us.
