“Good morning, gorgeous,” is how Paulette along with Leander
welcomed Fastima Patricia Jones, also known as “Punchy,” on March 8,
1973. She was the first little chocolate princess born to the Jones clan. She
was welcomed home by her grandparents, Lillie Mae Jones and the late
Qursene Jones, Sr., along with her aunts and uncles, Delores, Shirley,
Diane, the late Qursene Jones, Jr., and her favorite, the late Denise.
About eight months later, she welcomed her first best friend and
cousin, Charles. She immediately played mother and protector to all
who were born after her; that included Renaldo, Natasha, and Detra.
Together they were the Fave Five who wreaked havoc everywhere.
Punchy was the most intelligent person, so not only did she play mom,
but when she played mom, she would write excuse letters and sign them
to keep her cousins out of trouble while they were attending William H.
Brown School! She went on to attend Jens Jensen Scholastic Academy
where she graduated in 1987.
She then went to Steinmetz High School for two years and graduated
from Jones Metropolitan High School of Business and Commerce, now
known as Jones College Preparatory High School, in 1991 where she was
an accounting major.
Punchy shared an extremely special moment with her father, Jerome
Chatman, in 1986 when he took her to be the first person to see the first
property that was purchased for their family.
She really enjoyed watching baseball with her grandfather “Q”
as a young girl. Growing up, she and her sister, Detra, would find
entertainment with each other. From creating and speaking their
language that drove their mom bananas to watching Saturday morning
cartoons, wrestling, … and CLEANING. This duo quickly had additions
as her sisters all began to join the family—first Veronica, then Latoya,
Charmaine, and lastly Eboni.
It was just a couple years later that she become a mother herself. She
brought in a little chocolate princess of her own: Ariel. They created an
unbreakable mother/daughter/friend bond.
In March of 1994, she met the love of her life and forever best friend
Delshun. Together they created her second joy, LeShun, who she
affectionately called “Shunny Boo.”
On September 28, 1998, they displayed their love publicly in the union
of marriage. There was no changing of their minds. It was signed, sealed,
and delivered. Also being delivered were the true strings to her heart:
her grandchildren. Joree he thinks he was actually her son, Audree and
little diva, and the twins, Ava and Dakota (Bean and Juice).
She loved knowledge. She knew everything about everything because
she always read books. The Harry Potter and Flowers in the Attic series
were two of her favorites. She found comfort in 1,000+ piece puzzles
and 3D puzzles, and if you couldn’t find her doing one of those, you
could find her binge-watching movies of any genre.
Punchy loved doing makeup and playing dress-up with her daughters
and sisters. She enjoyed shopping and just being an all around support
to all her friends and family. If you were having an event, you could
count on her being there. If you asked, she would make the best salad
ever and the most amazing greens. You’d just have to call her a few times
before she’d answer.
