Obituary

March 22, 1956, marked a new and exciting day in the lives of two people. In the small unincorporated community of Ofahoma, Mississippi, James and Gladys Sylvester welcomed their vibrant baby girl into this world. They named her Geanell. Geanell understood the importance of having God in her life. She was baptized and received Jesus Christ as her personal savior. As a young adult, she was a faithful member of Faith Temple in Chicago, IL, under the leadership of Elder Wilson and sang in the choir. She graduated from Lucy Flowers High School in Chicago and later obtained a Certificate as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant from Malcolm X College. At the sweet age of 16, she married the love of her life, Samuel Bradley. Geanell loved Sam so much that she married him twice! From this union, she gave birth to one child – a handsome, smart, and loving son, Alfonzo T. Sylvester. She loved her family, and you could tell they were the center of her world. She could talk about them for hours, telling funny stories, and she doted on them, making sure they all looked good in the latest fashions from Meystel’s. Geanell was a nurturer by nature. Her home was filled with lovely plants that she grew over many years. She had a green thumb and could offer the best advice on nursing a plant back to health. Her nurturing spilled out of her home to those of her family members as she often helped to care for those with failing health. As a professional, she continued to nurture in her role as a Certified Nursing Assistant at various assisted living and nursing facilities. If Geanell was coming through the door, a good time was sure to follow. She loved to dance, sing, and enjoy life. She was the person who could relate to all members of the family – both young and old, as she captivated you with stories that started out with “Listennnnn.” Before she left, she would also make sure to tell you, “be good to yourself.” Geanell loved her church! After the doors of Faith Temple closed, Geanell became a member of Christian Valley Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Steve Greer. Geanell immediately felt at home at Christian Valley as she often felt like the pastor was speaking directly to her! Her praise would be accentuated by the beating of the tambourine, tears of joy, or exclamations of “Here I am, Lord!” She sang in the choir, served as a member of the beautification committee and was a part of Real Folks. Anyone who knew her knew that Psalm 27 was her favorite passage of Scripture as she wasted no time getting up and reciting it at everybody’s funeral. Geanell served the Lord until the day she died. On Thursday, Geanell attended corporate prayer at her beloved church. She followed up prayer by operating in her gift, caring for the plants on the church grounds. The very next day, May 26, 2023, Geanell said, “Here I am, Lord,” and made her transition from this earth. Geanell’s loving husband, mother, father, brothers, Wilson and Edward, sister, Gwendolyn, and only child, her son Alfonzo, preceded her in the journey home. Left here to cherish her memory are her loving grandchildren, Shawntania, Kyjuanzi, Keyanna, Du’Sean, Al’Neika, Alfonzo, Tyteanna, Ariel, Damien, Nia, and Christian; great-grandchildren, Leonardo, LeZavier, Kyliah, London, David, Darius, Jaci, Zyarie, Zakai, Zuri, and Isla; brothers, Lee Edward (Dolores), James (Diane), Pete (Robin), and Danny (Dorothy); sisters, Alfonzia and Vera; sister-in-law, Iris; and host of other relatives, friends, and church family
