Mother Helen Louise Whitfield, affectionally known as Dutchess, was born April 17, 1941, in Earle, Arkansas, to the union of William Henry and Mattie Dell Brown. She was second eldest of thirteen (13) children. Her parents; one sister, Della; and two brothers, James Henry and Arzabara, preceded her in death. Helen attended and graduated from Earle High School in 1959. Later that year, she moved to Chicago where she met and married the love of her life, Henry Whitfield. To this union, they shared three children; Phaylor, Kenneth and Mark. Helen started and completed her career in the medical field, working as a CNA from 1967 until she retired in 2000, after 33 ½ years in service. In 1969, Helen joined the People’s Temple Church of God in Christ (later renamed People’s Church of the Harvest Church of God in Christ) under the leadership of the late Elder Lawrence Parks. She accepted the Lord as her personal savior and began teaching Sunday School. In 1970, under the leadership of Elder William Eaddy, Sr., she was appointed to the Missionary Board, where she faithfully served until his death. In 1979, a new chapter in her spiritual journey began when she was appointed to the esteemed role of Church Mother by the current Pastor, Dr. Michael Eaddy. In this sacred position, she served faithfully as a mentor and devoted prayer warrior, offering wisdom and spiritual guidance to the younger women of the church while also providing steadfast support to the Pastor and First Lady. Mother Whitfield embraced the role of Church Mother with humility, dedication, and a loving heart. She was ever-present and willing to counsel, encourage, and uplift those around her. With a deep passion for living a holy life and carrying out the work of the Lord, she remained a shining example of grace, faith, and spiritual strength to all who were blessed to know her. On April 3, 2026 (Good Friday), Mother Whitfield gained her heavenly wings. She leaves to cherish her memory, her three (3) children, Phaylor (Darrell) Thomas, Kenneth (Linda) Whitfield, and Mark (Veronica) Whitfield; eight (8) grandchildren, Davina, Danielle, Deanna, Renita, Neisha, Danis, Jodi and Taylor; five (5) great-grandchildren, Darion, Chelsea, Janiya, Aleyca, Jaliyah and Santana; nine (9) siblings, Kathy Drake (Detroit, MI), Mattie Brown Daniel, Herschel (Amina) Brown, Melvinia Brown, Suzie Brown (all of Massachusetts), Surley Claybrooks (Chicago, IL), Dorothy Winfield (Atlanta, GA), Faye Grice (Wisconsin), and Ray (Gloria) Brown (Chicago, IL); a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; her Pastor and First Lady, Dr. Michael and Christine Rose Eaddy, her church family; and a host of other “adopted” children, friends and family.
