James “Jim” Barnett, Jr., of Naperville, Illinois, passed away peacefully to his eternal home on Saturday, February 7, 2026. James “Jim” was born one of six children on April 2, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Berdi Hill and James Barnett, Sr. James accepted Christ at an early age. James grew up in Chicago, Illinois, attended Crane High School, then went to Loop College. James “Jim” was employed by the City of Chicago for 38 years in the Department of Housing, land, and acquisitions. He was offered and accepted early retirement in the year 1994. James “Jim” loved gardening; you could always find him working in his yard. James “Jim” always put the need of others before his own. He was a loving husband, a great father and stepfather, wonderful brother, loving grandfather, thoughtful uncle, the best brother-in law, and a caring friend. He was preceded in death by his father, James Barnett Sr.; mother, Berdie Hill; son, Derrick Barnett; stepson, Anthony Oliver; sisters, Marcellene Howard and Barbara Barnett; and brother, Willis Barnett. James earthly story has ended, and he is now in a place of peaceful rest, but his legacy lives on. Leaving to cherish his memory and continue his legacy are: his beloved wife, Joyce; 32 years of marriage; son, Lance Barnett; stepson, Shawn Oliver; stepdaughter, Tameyia Johnson; sister, Debbie Smith; brother, Levi (Robin) Hill; grandchildren, Jasmine, Lauren, Darrius and Quiniya; great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
