James Milton Montgomery, Jr., lovingly known as Melvin aka “Mello” was born on June 25, 1969, to James Milton Montgomery and Bettie Mae Montgomery in St. Louis, MO. He was the first child born to this union. In 1972, the family moved to Chicago, IL. Melvin’s education included Thorpe and Steinmity High School. He worked as a cab driver for several years and has been employed at the Veteran Affairs for the last two years. Melvin was the apple of his mom’s eye. He just couldn’t do any wrong. Melvin’s sister, Sheryl, thought the world of her brother and ultimate love. She loved him enough to give him her kidney without thinking twice. If you knew Melvin, he would at one moment be talking with and to you and the next cussing you out and then turn really around say he’s sorry and tell you he loves you. Never going to sleep without making amends. It’s no secret how much he loved his mom, sister, daughters, and grandsons. Melvin was a very no-nonsense person and rarely involved himself in conversation that didn’t involve him. He was uninterested. Melvin loved his family but was in and out. He never stayed around too long; why, we never knew. Melvin was a very casual guy, never flamboyant, which explains the reasons for him not being in a suit. He wouldn’t be happy with that. We will never forget that beautiful smile, when he did smile. On his worst day, he was one of the most handsome guys out here! On Monday, August 19, 2024, the angel of silence came to seal the lips of Melvin at 8:17 AM. He was preceded in death by Melvin’s father, James Milton Montgomery; grandparents, Thurmond and Bernice Patton and John Allen and Adell Montgomery; uncles, Thurmond, Leroy, and Vernon; and aunt, Lovie. Melvin leaves to cherish: his loving mother, Bettie Mae Montgomery; sister, Sheryl Montgomery; daughters, Janika and Jada Montgomery; two nieces, Tacara and Tyteanna ; one nephew, Deshon; fiance, Sherene; and god sister, Ebony; great-nieces, Serenity and Isa, and great-nephews, Kalin, Darius and David; and a host of aunts, cousins, and friends.
