King Jerold Luckett, Sr., was born on a cold and blustery day on December
8, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois. His proud parents were Ms. Loretta Luckett and Mr.
Willie Luckett, Sr. Jerold’s childhood was spent on Mohawk Street near the Cabrini
Green Housing Projects. Later, as a teenager, he relocated to 1161 North Larrabee
Avenue with his mom, dad, and siblings.
Jerold attended Manierre Elementary School, Cooley High School, and later
Near North Career Magnet High School. He was not only academically astute
but he excelled on the basketball court. After many years of being outside of the
classroom, he returned to school in order to obtain his high school diploma from
James Madison High School. He also earned a Criminal Justice diploma from
Stratford Career Institute.
Jerold made a very important decision on January 28, 1991, when he decided to unite
in holy matrimony to a young woman he claimed to throw rocks at when he was a
teenager, a young woman who he said wouldn’t even give him the time of day. That
young woman, Ms. Clarinda L. Harris, not only became his wife but she also became a
mother to his five daughters and only son. Prior to this union, he was blessed with two
handsome sons, Jerold Jr. and Larry, and three years ago, he was blessed with daughter
number six, Angela Henderson. He also lovingly accepted the role of father to Angela’s
sister, Arrie’l.
Jerold was a hard-working man, and over the course of his fifty-nine years of life, he
worked in restaurants, hospitals, hotels, and even spent some time as a certified welder. His final place of employment was
with the Salvation Army where he refused to allow his failing health to rob him of the blessing of gainful employment.
Jerold was indeed a jack of all trades and master of them all, but no greater task brought him as much joy as lavishing
all of his support, sound advice, and deep love on his queens and kings. Jerold didn’t just talk the talk—he exemplified
fatherhood, genuine love, and unending care for the blessed gift of his children, family, dear friends, and even strangers.
If you took a dictionary (as a young man, Jerold was known to read the dictionary), and looked up the words father and
grandfather, you’d insert a picture of Mr. Jerold Luckett, Sr., because he practiced what he preached.
Lucky, as he was so affectionately called, or Jerry by family and close friends, was a dedicated,
loving, caring, and hysterically funny dad and dear friend. He had a personality that caught the
attention of many and that smile of his brought joy to most hearts. One of his best friends, Kerry,
felt that he was one-of-a-kind and there was never a dull moment when he was around. Jerold
was a firm believer in the true and living God, and as the years drifted by, Jerold learned the
importance of praying your way through. During his last trip to the emergency room when the
doctors said that he wouldn’t make it through the night, Jerold told them, “You don’t get to
decide when it is my time. Only God does.” And on that note, he walked out of the hospital and
went home. He simply said, “Life goes on.” Jerold’s life mattered and he will be greatly missed.
Jerold’s rest from all of his troubles began on Saturday morning, October 8, 2022,
at 10:24 AM. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Sr.; brothers,
Larry Patrick and Willie Jr.; and stepfather, Leon Sr.
Jerold leaves to cherish his memory: his three sons, Jerold Jr., Larry
Patrick, and Jeremy; six daughters, Lynetta, Jasmine, Jocelyn, Romesa,
Tyra, and Angela Henderson; nine grandchildren, Ja’Miah, Jai’den,
Bryant Jr., Ly’Niah, Raheim, Shamar, Malia, Kayden, and Ay’den; a
loving mother, Loretta Warren; three brothers, Nikki, Reggie, and Leon;
three sisters, Romesa, Rochelle, and Roxanne; a special friend and her
daughter, Charlotte and Arrie’l; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts,
uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
