John Lewis Bartley was born on February 4, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan, to the union of Augustus and Helen Bartley. He was the second of three children born of this union. He was preceded in death by his parents, Augustus and Helen Bartley, and brothers, Glen Bartley and Joseph Bartley. After graduating from Southwestern High School in 1969, he went to the Army and was honorably discharged after three years of service. He attended the University of Michigan and obtained his Bachelor of Education Degree in History in 1974. He worked as a computer programmer until 2022. On September 3, 1995, he was joined in holy matrimony to Katie Evans. John was an avid bowler. He loved barbecuing, traveling, playing golf, and spending time with his family. He made his final transition on April 29, 2025, surrounded by family at home in Chicago, Illinois. He leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Katie Evans Bartley; daughters, Chantelle (Joseph) Ogundele and Amber Bartley; two grandchildren, Elijah Ogundele and Joshua Ogundele; three sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; closest friends, Keith, and Marcus; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
