Jordean Withers

February 16, 1941 ~ November 7, 2021 (age 80)

Obituary

On the wings of death, the soul takes flight into the land where there is no night. For those who believe what the Savior said, will rise in glory, though they be dead. So death comes to us to open the door to the Kingdom of God. On the morning of Sunday, November 7, 2021, at 9:22 a.m., the Lord, Our God, said, “Well done,” and winged the soul of our beloved “Momma,” Jordean Withers to rest in the bosom of the Savior Jesus Christ. She was born to Annie B. Nesbit and Booker T. Withers on February 16, 1941, and raised in the Bronzeville Community on the Southside of Chicago, Illinois. As a newly single mom raising her three children, Jordean moved to Chicago’s Westside, West Gar eld Park, in search of better housing and opportunities. She accepted Christ at an early age, attended Canaan M.B. Church on the Southside of Chicago, and therea er, found a home at New Galilee Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Charles Murray, followed by Pastor Michael Ross. Her love for God and helping others was evident in all aspects of her life. When she rst accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior, she joined the Nurses Board to help provide healing to all that needed it. A er placing her children in school, she noticed that students, teachers, and families lacked the resources schools in more a uent areas had and founded the rst PTA at Melody School. She was instrumental in creating the foundation of today’s Community Schools that not only serve the students but also serve the surrounding community with needed resources. Because of this work, she was o ered a position working for the Chicago Board of Education, where she would go on to impact hundreds of student lives who attended Melody School that credit her caring spirit, stern, no-nonsense approach as the love and discipline they needed growing up to help keep them on the right track. A er retiring, she would later become a part of the Lawndale Christian Senior Day Services, where she made beautiful artwork, cra s, and encouraged other older adults to get out and get involved. Jordean was a loving mother, a devoted grandmother, and was cherished and beloved by family, friends, and those who met her. She was the h child of seven. Her siblings, James (Jimmie), Otha Lee, William, and Booker Withers, all preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Sherelle and Lantina; one son, Kelvin; three grandchildren, Porcha, Cody, and Jamiliyah; one brother, omas; one sister, Lena; three nieces; three nephews; three greatnieces; two great-nephews; and a host of relatives and very close friends. Loved dearly by her three children and countless others whose lives she touched, her good will and willingness to step into the re to tackle the ght will live on.
