Mary Ellen Freeman

MARY ELLEN FREEMAN, age 86, of Chicago,
Illinois, went home to be with the Lord on September 21,
2025, at UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital.
Mary was born on May 16, 1939, in Lexington, Mississippi, to
Pastor Fillmore Freeman and Ellen Meeks. She grew up with
her siblings, Charles Freeman, Fillmore Freeman, Alphonzo
Freeman, Mary Freeman, and Abraham Meeks. She later
moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she received her education
and cosmetology license from Kennedy King College.
roughout her life, Mary was devoted to her faith and family.
She faithfully attended Covenant United Church of Christ
alongside her daughter, Debra Ellen Jenkins,
Mary enjoyed line dancing to country music, trying various
foods and singing about Jesus to anyone that would be still
enough to listen. Mary will be remembered for her legacy of
resilience, her devotion to Jesus and family, and her sassy and
sweet nature.
Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Ellen
Jenkins, age 63. She is survived by her older brother, Fillmore
Freeman Jr.; grandchildren, Vanzell Fellie Jenkins, Jr.; wife,
Tiany Williams, Ayla Ellen Jenkins, Xxavier Lavell Jenkins,
Nana Omni Jenkins, Majestyc Love Smith, and orton
Pasqualee Smith; and great-grandchildren, Nyla Ellen Wright
and Zaine Jermaine Smith.
Mary has an extended family that were close. She will be
missed a lot.
