MARY JANE HAMPTON was born August 17, 1938, in Brooksfield, Mississippi
(Nombre County), to the late Judge and Gertruge Tate. Mary made her transition on February 5, 2026.
She went to Balwin Elementary School and Wilson High School.
Mary received Christ and was baptized at an early age. When she came to Chicago she joined St. John
Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Holy Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church under the
leadership of the late Reverend C.T. Baker, where his faith continued to grow. Before she passed she was
a member of Great Arising Star under the leadership of Pastor Bailey.
Mary wore many hats but she retired from William Electronics. Mary married the late Willie C. Hampton,
Jr., in November 1955. Out of this union, they had seven children, five of whom preceded her in death,
Michael (2011), Claudette (1982), Melvin (1997), Delorise (2015), and Sabrina (2020). One grandson,
Gregory (2009), and one great-grandson, Garion (2019), also preceded him in death.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Darlene
Hampton-Williams, and her son, Willie (Big Head)
Hampton; six grandchildren she raised as her own Yolanda,
Geneva, Lydia, Constant, Kenyatta, and Samar; eight other
grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren;eighteen
great-great-grandchildren; two special cousins, Dorthy
Ike and Ruby Hampton; six sisters, Bertha Lee Beard,
Inez Whitmire (David), Arabell Smith, Bettie Key Bijou,
Christine, Gavin-Lanthan, and Ella May; six brothers,
Essie Tate, Judge Tate, Edward Tate, Howard Tate, James
Tate, and John M. Tate; a special sister friend to the end
Emma Tate; and a host of other relatives and friends.
