Mary Pirtle was born on March 15, 1948, to the late Edward and
Barbara Williams. She was the oldest daughter of twelve children.
Mary accepted Christ at an early age. She faithfully served as the
President of the Nurses Board at Grace Memorial Baptist Church.
She graduated from John Marshall High School. Mary worked at
Ballard Nursing Home as a CNA until her illness took place. She
lived an abundant life filled with love, warmth, and kindness. She
welcomed everyone and always had an answer or a solid solution
to anyone’s problems.
She would often say, “Get that Book, and get on your knees.” She
believed the best solution was always prayer. Mary would always
remind others, “You have not because you ask not.” One thing was
certain—what she spoke often came to pass. She shared great words
of wisdom and kept everyone laughing with her wonderful sense of
humor (she was part of the family of “signifying monkeys”)—LOL.
Mary would give you the shirt off her back, and if you didn’t take
it, she would gladly give it to someone else. To know her was to
love her. You could always depend on her. She was dedicated and
dependable in all that she did.
Mary was called home on November 9, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Stamps and
Willie Pirtle; sons, Andre Williams and John Stamps, Jr.;
grandson, Jonathan Stamps; parents, Edward and Barbara
Williams; brothers, Edward Jr., Jesse, and Michael Williams; and
sisters, Geneva, Elizabeth, Venus Williams, and Denise Terry.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Philip Stamps;
daughters, Latonya and Tammy Stamps; sixteen grandchildren,
thirty-five great-grandchildren, and sixteen great-greatgrandchildren;
she also leaves three brothers, James, Ronald
(Darlene), and Reginald Williams; one sister, Pastor Apostle
Shirley Williams of Florida; sister-in-law, Patricia Williams;
uncle, Tony Tidwell of Detroit, Michigan; and best friend (sister
by heart), Patsy Campbell.
Mary, take your rest now. Job well done, thou faithful servant. You
will be and already are truly missed.
