Melvin Calhoun Obituary

Melvin Calhoun was born on June 14, 1951, in Cruger, Mississippi, to the union of Jebb and Lucille Calhoun, both of whom preceded him in death. Melvin, or “Teenie” as he was affectionately called by relatives and friends, was preceded in death by his siblings, Rubin Calhoun, Leroy Calhoun, Geraldine Calhoun, Katherine Dothard, Alma Calhoun, Doris Calhoun, and Roosevelt Calhoun; Melvin was also preceded in death by five other siblings as well as niece, Doris Woods, and great-niece, Cheanita Meme Woods. Melvin attended school in Cruger, Mississippi. Melvin, who was the second or next to the youngest, and his older siblings were put to work at an early age assisting on the Calhoun Land. Often, his older sisters, Katherine and Doris, dragged him to Sunday services at St. Peter the Rock Missionary Baptist Church. Teenie, as a very young man, followed his older siblings with migrating to Chicago, Illinois, in 1975. Melvin found employment as a Laborer at USS Gary Steel Works. Teenie stayed on at USS Gary Steel Works for another three years and thereafter enrolled in an intensive program designed to teach Firearm Safety and Training for those who desired to become an Armed Security Guard. Melvin became an Armed Guard with Thillens. Melvin’s job required him to be licensed and bonded, and he worked as an armed security guard until an unforeseen illness forced him to cease carrying a firearm. Teenie was a devoted son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, friend, and confidant to many who knew and cared about him. Teenie loved to get out and about and was an avid walker who loved getting from one destination to the next using his legs, getting fresh air in his lungs and being out meeting new people along his various walking routes!! Teenie departed this life after a valiant and courageous fight against congestive heart failure and dementia on Sunday, April 27, 2025, in Oak Lawn, Illinois. The most fond memories will forever rest with his brothers, James and Al Jean Calhoun, both of Chicago; as well as nieces, Rogerine, Marietta and Katherine and Helen; nephews, Terry, Lerenzo (Hope), and Cory; great-nieces, Tracy, Marquita (Antonio), Alexandria (Jared), Terri Lynn, and TJ; great nephews, Chase, David (Itasia), Kevin, Myles, and Christian; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
