Michael Batts Obituary

Mr. Michael H. Batts “Mike” was born November 26, 1949, in Chicago, IL, to Fred Batts, Sr. and Edith Dean. Mike was the fourth of six children. His parents and two siblings preceded him in death (Faye & Fred Jr.). Mike accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Olive under the leadership of the late Rev. Fred Daniel. Mike received his education in the Chicago Public School System where he graduated from Edward Jenner Elementary school and Waller High School. He also attended Loop College. Mike worked at Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and retired after 30+ years of service. Mike had a love for jazz music, good food, and good times with friends and family. To know him was truly to love him. He had a big heart and was always a big giver. Mike was affectionately known to many as Batts, Pops, Ole Guy, GPops, Ugy Ugy, Big Bro, Uncle Mike and so many other names were given to him by friends and loved ones. One thing for sure: Mike was always known for giving you a nickname. If he gave you a nickname you knew you were a part of his family. Mike met the love of his life in grammar school: Rubbiestein Williams. They were high school sweethearts who would later marry. To this union three children were born: Nina Michelle, Michael Harvey, Jr. and Anthony Maurice. Rubbiestein preceded him in death. On January 5, 2026, at 9:20am, Michael transitioned to his heavenly home. His loving memories will be cherished by his three children: daughter Nina Southward (Christopher); sons Michael Williams and Anthony Batts; five granddaughters: Chrishelle Jana’, Jada’ Brionna, Chyra J’Naya, Ja’nyla Nevaeh, Jaliyah Michelle; grandsons: Brandon, Jerry, Jayden Anthony, Jaylen Maurice; one sister Donnie Henry; two brothers: Errol (Vernita) Batts and Henry Batts; two god-daughters: Natasha Neal and Barbara Pruitt; and one godson Jason Childs, his best pal (grand-puppy Colby James) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and Childhood friend: Frederick Brown.
