Michael Cox Obituary

MICHAEL LOUIS COX, affectionately known to many as a man of strength, pride, and quiet dignity, was born on November 6, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, at Cook County Hospital to Chloe and Albert Cox. He was the third blessing born into this loving union. At an early age, Michael accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He attended and was baptized at Harmony Community Church under the leadership of Pastor James Brooks. His faith remained an anchor throughout his life, guiding his steps and shaping his character. Michael dedicated nearly four decades of service to Northwestern Railroad, now Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked from 1978 until 2016. He carried immense pride in his work—operating freight trains across the city and beyond. His train master key collection was a symbol of his passion for his craft, and he often spoke with joy about the responsibility and honor of moving goods that kept communities thriving. On February 15, 1983, Michael’s life was forever brightened when he was united in holy matrimony with the love of his life, Sandra, in Chicago, Illinois. Their bond was one of commitment, laughter, and unwavering love. From this beautiful union, their daughter Yakia Cox was born, adding even more joy to his journey as a husband and father. Michael’s legacy is carried forward through his beloved wife, Sandra Cox; children, Jacqueline Brooks (James), Yakia Cox-Williams (Dwayne), and LaDarius Hughes; and treasured grandchildren, Janay Brooks, Jaylah Brooks (Pedro), Keegan Williams, and Kindred Williams, who each brought a sparkle to his eyes and a smile to his face. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Alvin Cox, Kevin Cox, and Bennie Harris. Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Carolyn Cox-Jones, Daryl Cox, Tracy Harris and Georgina Johnson -Hopkins; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends who loved him deeply. Michael will be remembered as a hardworking man who stood tall in his commitments, a husband who loved with his whole heart, a father and grandfather who poured into his family, and a faithful servant of God who ran his race well. His presence will be missed, but his impact will live on in the lives of all who were blessed to know him. “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” – Matthew 25:2
