Mother Mary Daniel Obituary

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalms 103:1-5 MARY JANE DANIEL was born on November 2, 1944, to the parents of Rachel Catching and Dan Walker in Claiborne County, Mississippi. She accepted Christ at an early age and never forgot her faith. She graduated from Port Gibson High School and went on to attend Alcorn State University in Mississippi. She relocated to Chicago in 1966. On June 25, 1977, Mary was united in holy matrimony to Moses Daniel at Grace Memorial Church, where she was a member and served on the usher board under the leadership of Reverend Johnson. This union had created a blended family: Mary’s two girls, Glenda and Gretta, and Moses’ three boys, Kenneth, Keith, and Michael. She was an Eastern Star member serving with her sisters, Mary Oakly and Barbara Washington. In 1980, with her new union, they joined True Faith Primitive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Elder Benjamin F. Daniel, Sr., and the late First Lady Dora Daniel, and she continued her service as an usher under the leadership of Pastor James Hampton. Mary worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Chicago for ten years and at Loyola Hospital as an LPN for over fifteen years until she retired in 1991. Upon retirement, she and Moses moved to Sturtevant, Wisconsin, where they transferred their membership to Greater Mount Eagle Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Keith Evans. She continued to do the Lord’s work, being crowned a missionary and a mother, while visiting nursing homes and feeding the homeless with her grandchildren in tow She co-owned MJD Catering with her late husband, Moses. In their catering business, she was known for some of the most delicious sides. When her eyesight began to fail and the doctor told her she could no longer use the stove, her response was, “That is the best news I ever got.” Lol, her cooking days had ended, and she was glad about it. Upon relocating back to Chicago, she attended Thompson Hopewell Church under the leadership of Pastor Torrence Ivy. Mary continued to nurture her grandchildren and great grandchildren until her health began to fail. But one could always catch her singing or humming a tune around the house. She listened to and spoke about the Word of God until the end. She departed this life quietly in her home with her daughter, Glenda, holding her hand as the 103rd Psalm eased her to sleep. There is no doubt that she is walking around heaven hand in hand with her beloved Moses. Mother Daniel was preceded in death by her daughter, Quintella; husband, Deacon Moses Daniel; mother, Rachel Windmon-Howard; father, Dan Walker; stepfather, Phillip Howard; sisters, China (Willie) Wells, and Barbara Washington; sisters-in-law, Edna Howard, Dora Daniel, and Minnie Thomas; brothers, Johnny Windmon, L.D. Windmon, W.C. Windmon, Willie Lee Windmon, Percy Howard, and Phillip Howard Jr.; and son-in-law, David R. Thomas.
