Phyllis Sturkey was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 20, 1960, to Emma Jean Edwards and Odell. She was the second oldest of three children. Phyllis attended and graduated from Nash Elementary School and Austin High School in Chicago, Illinois. She later worked at Columbus Park Nursing Home for 15 years and Central Nursing Home for four years, all while raising five children. From an early age, Phyllis enjoyed playing softball and played back catcher for “The Classic Ladies” in the early ‘80s. In 1982, she married Charles Sturkey, Sr. This union blessed them with five children. Celebrations were a must for Phyllis, she enjoyed throwing gatherings and parties where she would show off her awesome dancing skills. The kids always looked forward to going to grandmas for all holidays and birthdays. Her favorite saying was “Ching Ching M...” (Y’all know the rest.) Phyllis departed her life on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 4:04 p.m. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Sturkey, Sr.; brother, Sidney Edwards; and granddaughter, Davane Gross. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her lifelong companion of 36 years, Freddie Latimore; four beautiful daughters, Anastasia (Zachery) Bass, Latasha (Antoine) Gibson, Emor Sturkey, and Sherita (Shaun) Nixon; one son, Charles Sturkey, Jr.; one sister, Gail Ross; three aunts, Nedra, Brenda, and Anastasia Edwards; 20 grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. To all who loved and cared, Phyllis would like to say, “Ching, Ching.”
