Roosevelt Calhoun was born on October 1, 1939, in Cruger, Mississippi, to the union of Jebb and Lucille Calhoun, both of whom preceded him in death. Roosevelt (or ” Bulb” as well as “Norman” as he was a ectionately called by relatives and friends) was preceded in death by his siblings, Rubin Calhoun, Leroy Calhoun, Geraldine Calhoun, Katherine Dothard, Alma Calhoun, and Doris Calhoun. Roosevelt was also preceded in death by ve other siblings as well as niece, Doris Woods, and great-niece, Cheanita Meme Woods. Roosevelt attended school in Cruger, Mississippi. Roosevelt and his older siblings were put to work at an early age assisting on the Calhoun Land and providing labor help to their father, Jebb. Roosevelt’s older sisters, Katherine and Doris, o en dragged him to Sunday Services at St. Peter the Rock Missionary Baptist Church. Roosevelt as a young man followed his older siblings with migrating to Chicago, Illinois, in 1961. Roosevelt was a dedicated and long-time employee of Burney Brothers Bakery. In the early 80’s, the entrepreneurial bug bit Roosevelt and he was one of the winners of the City of Chicago’s Taxi Cab Medallion Lottery. He was able to associate with Abernathy Cab Company on 81st and King Drive as his Taxi Cab Stand base and successfully operated his own Medallion until his retirement. Roosevelt was a devoted son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, friend, and con dant to many who knew and cared about him. When the entire Calhoun clan assembled in Cruger, Missouri, he would give pocket change to his nieces and nephews in order for them to buy penny candy from Mae Willie’s Candy Store – right across the way from the Calhoun Home. Roosevelt departed this life a er a valiant and courageous ght against Congestive Heart Failure and Dementia on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at St Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. e most fond memories will forever rest with: brothers, James, Melvin, and Al Jean Calhoun, all of Chicago; nieces, Rogerine, Marietta, Katherine, and Helen; nephews, Terry, Lerenzo (Hope), and Cory; great-nieces, Tracy, Marquita (Antonio), Alexandria (Jared), Terri Lynn, and TJ; great-nephews, Chase, David (Itasia), Kevin, Myles, and Christian; several great-great-nieces, greatgreat-nephews, and a host of cousins and friends.
