Sylvester Johnson, Jr. Obituary

Sylvester Clemmon Johnson, Jr.,
was born on July 16, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to the union of
George A. S. C. Johnson, Sr. and Doris Elizabeth Johnson. After the passing of his mother, he was lovingly raised by his
aunt, Louise Nix, on the South Side of Chicago. Under her nurturing guidance and prayerful care, Sylvester grew into a
young man of strength, integrity, and unwavering faith—qualities that would shape his character and illuminate his life’s
journey.
As a young man, Sylvester attended St. James Catholic School, singing as a tenor in the boys’ choir, and later graduated
from Dunbar High School. Following the example set by his father, he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 18 in
Pensacola, Florida. After completing his honorable service, he returned home to Chicago to begin the next chapter of his
life.
In 1985, Sylvester met the love of his life, Diana Smith. From that moment on, the two shared an unbreakable bond—one
marked by devotion, partnership, and deep affection that lasted until his transition.
Sylvester accepted Christ at the tender age of 13 at Monument of Faith, under the anointed leadership of Apostle Richard D.
Henton. His walk with God continued to flourish as he joined Healing Temple C.O.G.I.C., guided by the spiritual covering
of Dr. Arthur Lockhart. In time, the Lord led him to Corinthian Temple C.O.G.I.C., where he became a devoted and joyful
member under the pastorate of Bishop Bennie Allison.
At Corinthian Temple, and later under the inspired leadership of Bishop Allison’s successor, Bishop David Todd Whittley,
Sylvester Johnson served the Lord faithfully and wholeheartedly. He labored diligently as a Deacon, Treasurer, and teacher
within the Sunday School Department, offering his gifts with humility, strength, and unwavering dedication.
He stood faithfully beside his beloved wife, Diana Johnson, who serves with grace as President of the Hospitality Board.
Together, they were a shining example of God’s love—admired for their devotion to the Lord, their church family, their
Pastor, and—most beautifully—for their deep and abiding love for one another.
Professionally, Sylvester was known for his dedication and strong work ethic. He retired from the United States Postal
Service in 2015 after 25 years of service. Many affectionately called him “Grey Tape” because he could fix nearly anything
with a simple strip of duct tape. He also served as CFO of 5 Peas In A Pod Learning Academy and the 5 Peas In A Pod
Foundation, working tirelessly each day to ensure the daycare opened smoothly and operated with excellence.
Deacon Sylvester Johnson departed this life on Friday, November 14, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents, George
and Doris Johnson, and his brother, Timothy Johnson.
Sylvester will be remembered as a man of strong determination, unwavering faith, and heartfelt devotion. His signature
phrase, “Thank God for Jesus,” echoed the sincerity of his spirit. His service, attitude, and personality reflected a man who
dearly loved the Lord, cherished his family, supported his church, and joyfully served his community.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 40 years, Diana Johnson; his seven children: Towanda (Dante), Latisha,
Fatina (Rodney), Veronica (Jeff), Samantha, Sylvia, and Elizabeth; his siblings: Yvette, Terry, Debra, and Zachary; his
loving in laws Eugene, Lydia (Sam), Dale (Roslyn), Terry, Patricia, his grandchildren: Natiara, Rodney Jr., Antwoin Jr.,
Brandon Jr., Robert, Lamont Jr., Jaylin, Jurlin, Nakita, Chianti, Malachi, Ahrianna, Ahyanna, Rhiley, and Karter; his
great-grandchildren: A’Maris, Jurlin Jr., and Letwion; along with a host of in-laws, cousins, family, friends, and his beloved
Corinthian Temple Church Family.
Deacon Sylvester Clemmon Johnson, Jr. lived a life of purpose, service, and love. His legacy will continue to shine brightly
in the hearts of all who knew him.
