SYLVESTER “SLUGGER” WHITE lived life with a spirit that could never be contained—a spirit that lifted others, steadied them, and made them feel seen. Born on October 5, 1951, he grew into a man whose love for God shaped the way he moved through the world. His presence had a way of brightening a room, softening a moment, or reminding you that you weren’t alone. From childhood, Sylvester carried a mind that amazed everyone around him. He read and memorized the entire encyclopedia from A to Z, a testament to the curiosity and brilliance that would follow him throughout his life. He remembered names, dates, and stories with a clarity that felt almost magical. His education took him through Malcolm X College, National Louis University, Alcorn State University, and Chicago State University—each step reflecting his hunger to learn and grow. Sylvester worked hard, not just because he had to, but because he believed in showing up. He served at the IRS, Heitman Financial, and 1st Chicago Bank before retiring as a Clerk of the Circuit Court. Even after retirement, he returned to work at Thorntons, greeting people with the same warmth, humor, and reliability that defined him. He was a competitor at heart—a skilled bid‑whist player, bowler, and pool player—and he carried the nickname “Slugger” proudly. A nurse gave him that name the day he was born, struck by his size and strength, and it stayed with him for the rest of his life. But beyond the strength, beyond the talent, was a man who loved deeply. He loved his friends. He loved his family. And he loved his community in LeClaire Courts with a loyalty that never wavered. Sylvester is survived by his daughter, Anita Marie (Jarrod), who carries his strength; grandchildren, Tywana, Marjai (Jane), Jada, Janae, and Christian, who carry his joy; and great‑grandson, Semaj, newly arrived and already part of his legacy. He is also survived by his brother, Felton; sister, Anita; nephews, Toby, Jareese, Chris, Malkhom, Nicholas, and Camron; nieces, Fe Lena (Jarrod), Carolyn, Latreace (Deon), Diamond, and Nina; and the children he raised as his own, Darin, Jason, Mark, Andre, Johnnie, Myra, Kathy, Robin, and Faye; and cousins, Thelma, Alice, Antionette Winder, and their children who also mourn the loss of a man who meant so much. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eugenia; father, Sylvester; nieces, Sharece and Fayette; and grandmother, Alice—loved ones he now joins in rest. Sylvester passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 74, at his residence in Oak Brook Terrace, Illinois. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his memory—his laughter, his brilliance, his kindness—will continue to live in the hearts of all who knew him.
