Thurman Lee Wells was born in Merigold, Mississippi on October 20, 1951, to the union of Vera and Charles Wells. He was the firstborn of thirteen children. Thurman accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age under the leadership of Pastor Connor of St. Michael. He later moved his membership to Corinthian Temple under the leadership of Reverend Benny Allison. He was a devoted son, husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Thurman graduated with high honors from John Marshall Metropolitan High School in 1969. He continued his education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied education and graduated in 1973. After graduating, he began his career as a teacher in Rockwell Gardens at The Beacon House, where he served for over seven years on the west side of Chicago. At Beacon House, he was more than a teacher—he was a leader, role model, and mentor. He had a deep passion for guiding and uplifting youth, always striving to instill discipline, confidence, and purpose in their lives. Affectionately known as “Red” by family and friends, he was known for his stern personality, teaching his students and peers the importance of discipline, respect, and integrity, all while having a heart of gold. Thurman also had a passion for bowling. He was a proud member of the Wrecking Crew Bowling Team from 1983 to 1986, traveling to different states to compete in tournaments and building lasting friendships along the way. In addition to his work in education, Thurman served as a Supervisor for the Board of Elections from 2000 to 2022, demonstrating his commitment to civic duty and his community. Thurman loved to travel, watch sports, and barbecue. Known as the “BBQ King,” he was always on the grill, bringing his own touch to every gathering. He enjoyed bringing people together with good food, laughter, and conversation. He was giving, uplifting, and encouraging— always ready to listen, always ready to offer advice, and always showing up for the people he loved. His impact on family and friends will never be forgotten. Thurman was united in marriage to Betty Raggs Wells, and to this union one daughter was born, Shevonne Wells, who held a special place in his heart. Later in life, he met Laris Boatman, and they were married on February 14, 2011. They shared a loving marriage for 15 years until God called him home. On Saturday, March 28, 2026, our Heavenly Father called Thurman home from labor to reward. Job well done, “Thou good and faithful servant.” He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Vera Wells; sisters, Dorothy Brown and Shenova Williams; brothers, Angelo Wells, Jerome Wells, Kenneth Wells; grandson, Lamaro Parker Jr.; and brother-in-law, Lucius Williams.
